Moving your cat: everything you need to know

Moving your cat is not an easy task. Cats are extremely attached to their own place and if you suddenly take them elsewhere, they might feel disoriented. Naturally, that is unpleasant, because it is important for your cat to feel good as well. Preparation is definitely required to make your cat feel at home in your new place. And most likely, this will benefit you as well. It can prevent your cat from mewing continuously and asking your attention in the middle of the night.

  1. Moving your cat – a week beforehand
Cats easily figure out something is about to happen. For instance, they might hear the sound of moving furniture and pickup stress signals from people around them. It is important to create a safe place especially for your cat. About two weeks before moving, make a safe area for your cat where she can be alone. Clear the area, put cat toys in it and place the cat carrier with a blanket inside. It gives your cat the opportunity to go this area and easily adjust to the situation, before the removal actually takes place.
  2. During your removal
Things can become quite hectic in your hose the day of the removal. Everyone is walking around and there is stuff everywhere. Keep your cat in its special cat room and remove any furniture there. Only bring the cat carrier when everything is already in the moving truck. The cat stays away from the hectic of the removal, allowing her to remain calm. Make sure to create her own special place in your new home so she recognizes something in a brand new environment.
  3. After the removal
How much time it takes to adjust, depends on your cat. Stay focused on her behaviour and depending on the situation, you can ultimately trade in her carrier for her basket or something else she likes sleeping on. Do not let your cat go outside the first three weeks. You risk her walking back to your old house or going on a search for it. After three weeks and her showing calm and normal behaviour, it is safe to let your cat go outside again.
